BEST BOOK FOR SSC CGL
I have cleared the SSC CGL exam with a rank below 500. Before I suggest you what books to refer, let me give you a scenario you are in.
Your friends or other competitors are buying many books, you meet them every day in the park or the coaching class, or you talk on phone, they tell you all the new things that they learnt from the new book, and why the book you are referring to, let's call it 'x' is so outdated and would not get you anywhere.
You think about it for while which puts you in a dilemma. Whether to buy it or not. The type of situation you are in, where you just want to clear the exam by hook or by crook, your insecurities overpower you and you realise that you need the NEW book that your friend referred you with, else you will lose out. You go to the book store, buy that book and come to your room with a sense of satisfaction that now you are also in the league of those who will clear it.
But will you clear the exam now ?
Off course not.
Reason you ask. Let me give you a few.
1) You cannot study too many books. It only distracts you.
2) You don't work on what is needed for the exam, rather you want to acquire the highest level of knowledge in the subject which will not take you anywhere.
3) You buy the NEW book, read a topic or two from it, then another NEW book comes to the market, the same story flashes all over again and BOOM, you have another BRAND NEW book on your shelf. In turn, you don't study from any of them properly. This fills you with negativity, it reduces your confidence as you have not accomplished the task of finishing the book that you must have thought in your mind while buying that book.
Moral of the story
Don't buy too many books. Just focus on the once you have a study them to the fullest. Revise it 2-4 times and you are good to go.
Enough of the lecture, coming to facts.
I won't tell you which books to read, I will just tell what I read for clearing the exam. You have to apply your brain and decide what will be good for you.
Starting with the most important subject in the SSC exam.
Quantitative aptitude (or Maths as many call it)
In the beginning, I tried many high level books of foreign and Indian writers. Many were actually good too, but I ended up not studying them after a week or two. They were too deep and sometimes reach to the level beyond SSC examination.
The most important thing which I focused on were my class notes. I revised the questions taught in my coaching again and again till they find themselves a place in my brain. You can get many such good notes in Delhi's Mukherjee Nagar market. However, it is generally better if you make your own notes rather than following someone else's.
In case, you have not attended any coaching class and still want some notes, you can refer to the Class Notes of Maths (2018-2019 Session): (Handwritten Notes) by
Rakesh yadav sir.
Rakesh yadav sir.
If your not from Delhi or live far from Mukherjee Nagar, this is the best you can get. I have found them for you. Click on the name of the Book above. They are available online too.
In books, I referred to the earlier versions of SSC Mathematics (1999-2017) 7300 Objective Questions by Rakesh yadav. It a really good book to read and cover most of the topics. I am not endorsing books just by Rakesh Yadav Sir. You can even refer SSC Mathematics by Kiran Prakashan. Both books are equally good and have the same questions from previous year papers). I liked Rakesh Yadav more as it has better answer explanations. Don't buy any other books, they are not needed.
When you are done with any one of the above books atleast 2-3 times and still have time left, try to solve a good Quantitative Aptitude book for CAT. I haven't done it myself, but I am suggesting you this as SSC is gradually increasing the level of their questions.
Which books you ask ?
I have no idea. Do your own research. But do it only after you finished anyone of the above books atleast twice.
English
Cautionary Advice: Don't take it lightly even if your fluent in English. It might drag you down.
There are 3 books I referred for English. Apart from previous year question papers which are of utmost importance. I will give you what topics I studied from which book.
1) A Mirror of Common Errors by Dr. Ashok Kumar Singh
If your brain, still translate sentences to English from Hindi. This is the book for you to refer. This book has by far the best Grammar portion. It concise, without a lot of junk and good amount of questions to practice and amazing explanation for their answers.
Many people suggest this book on quora, but let me tell you, for a normal human being like me, it's a very high level and difficult to read book. I am saying this, even when I have studied from Bakshi Sir's school and knew him personally.
Read this book for the chapter: Voice. If you complete that chapter from SP Bakshi thoroughly, your marks in ‘Voice’ won't go anywhere from you. Then, this book also has a very good vocab part. Read Synonyms, Antonyms, One word substitution etc from this book. It had limited material but very important. You might get a good score.
3) ENGLISH FOR GENERAL COMPETITIONS COMBO SET VOL I OR II (2 BOOKS SET) Plinth to Paramount by Neetu Singh:
Good book for extra practice. One of the old gems of the town. It has the best chapter for Narration (Direct-Indirect Speech).
But, as I earlier suggested. Give utmost importance to practice previous year question papers. English becomes good with practice. Otherwise, you might think, what you answered is correct in all respect, but it would turn out to be wrong.
Reasoning
1) Previous year paper of SSC CGL for Reasoning.
2) A Modern Approach to Verbal & Non-Verbal Reasoning by RS Agarwal: Too much quantity, just do the topics that are covered in the SSC syllabus and ignore the rest.
General Studies:
Don't waste much time on GS. Just study it when you getting bored of studying other 3 subjects.
1) SSC General Studies 7300+
Solve it as much as you can. Just don't linger on it.
I hope my answer is of some value to you. Just study hard and trust GOD.
You would do great in life.
Good luck folks.
